When you open the January/February 2017 “Awake” Craftly box, you’ll find a unique scrub towel that says, “Binchotan”. When I first saw that, I had no idea what it was and why it’s good for my skin. Using charcoal masks has become a popular facial skin care practice, but it can also peel off healthy skin if you use charcoal mask peels. This is where this towel comes in. With the binchotan charcoal woven-in, you can use it to gently scrub off the dirt and oils while protecting your healthy skin. This towel is crafted and designed by the brand Morihata.

Morihata is an international brand established by a husband-and-wife duo Kaz and Yuka Morihata. They are dedicated to sourcing and distributing the highest quality in Japanese design products and introducing these products to a global scale. The team is based in Philadelphia, but they often travel to Japan to find goods that match their standards in quality and design.

“Our goal is to introduce the global market to the makers and creators of Japan. We partner with like-minded brands and unique shops to foster an appreciation for products that are aesthetically pleasing, designed to last, functionally superior, and steeped in tradition.”

The products they curate aim to elevate the experience of their customers. We’re so happy that we are able to work with them! From every brand we collaborate with, we learn something that can propel us to move forward. With Morihata, Craftly learned that we have aligned intentions of discovering and sharing products that can help enhance our everyday life experience. Binchotan Charcoal is their most popular private label collection. Behind this collection is a handful of charcoal artisans from Kishu, Japan that source the highest-quality activated charcoal that becomes integrated in their products, exactly like the face scrub towel featured in the January/February 2017 “Awake” Craftly box.

“Kishu Binchotan Charcoal is known as the highest quality of activated charcoal for purifying water, Binchotan charcoal can also be used to capture moisture and odors from the air, enhance blood circulation in a hot bath, stimulate healthy soil in the garden or to deflect negative ions in your home.”

Although they started out as a curator and distributor, Morihata has branched out to having their own retail brand Rikumo. From Morihata: "Rikumo is a combination of 'riku' which means earth, and 'kumo' which means cloud. By mixing those two words, Rikumo products combine the physical labor of Japanese craftsmanship with the universality of abstract Japanese concepts and values. It's not really a 'philosophy for earth and cloud' but rather the principles by which we select the sort of products we carry."
